Sangdok Palri Monastery

Sangdok Palri Monastery located in the picturesque village of Syala within Chumnubri Rural Municipality, Gorkha District is a beautiful and sacred center of Buddhist spirituality nestled in the heart of the Himalayas. Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,500 meters above sea level, the monastery is surrounded by breathtaking mountain landscapes including the magnificent Mt. Manaslu (8,163 meters), the eighth-highest mountain in the world. Its serene setting offers an ideal environment for meditation, spiritual practice and contemplation.
Belonging to the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, Sangdok Palri Monastery was established through the dedicated vision and tireless efforts of Dharma Guru Lama Sonam Dorje Rinpoche. The monastery serves as an important spiritual and cultural landmark for the local community, preserving Buddhist teachings, rituals and the rich artistic heritage of the Himalayan region.
I was deeply honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the artistic development of this remarkable monastery. Despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was successfully completed through the generous support and collaboration of numerous individuals, organizations and community-based initiatives. Their collective dedication played a vital role in bringing this sacred vision to fruition.
The monastery is adorned with traditional Buddhist artworks, sacred murals, decorative motifs and symbolic designs created in accordance with authentic Himalayan Buddhist artistic traditions. Every artistic element was carefully crafted to enhance the spiritual atmosphere of the monastery while preserving the profound symbolism and cultural values embedded within Buddhist art. The vibrant colors, intricate details and sacred imagery contribute to an environment that inspires devotion, wisdom and inner peace.
Today, Sangdok Palri Monastery stands as a testament to faith, perseverance and community collaboration. Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Himalayas, it continues to serve as a beacon of Buddhist spirituality, cultural preservation and traditional Himalayan craftsmanship for generations to come.
